Nauticat 33 “Solveig” – solid motorsailer with generous living space
The Nauticat 33 “Solveig” is a classically built Finnish motorsailer from 1976, designed for comfortable and safe cruising in a wide range of conditions. This model has earned a strong reputation over the decades for its robust construction and practical layout, something that is immediately noticeable on board.
What sets this Nauticat apart is the sense of space and shelter. The wheelhouse is the heart of the boat, offering a comfortable seating area and panoramic visibility, allowing you to steer from inside in less favorable weather. Combined with the separate aft cabin and additional berths forward, there is ample room to stay on board with several people for extended periods without feeling cramped. New mattresses were recently installed in the forward cabin, improving overall comfort.
The interior features classic woodwork, giving the boat a warm and timeless atmosphere. The galley has been updated with a new stove and oven and is practically arranged for use both underway and in port. The sanitary area is complete with an electric toilet and shower. With onboard heating, the boat is not limited to summer use and is well suited for spring, autumn, or longer stays aboard.
Below deck is a Ford Lehman 80 hp diesel engine, known for its reliability and straightforward mechanics. A new 200-liter stainless steel fuel tank has recently been installed. Together with the battery charger/inverter, solar panels, and a wind generator (still to be installed), the boat offers a good level of autonomy, making longer stays without shore power feasible.
In recent years, the boat has mainly been used as a motor vessel and was sailed without masts. For this purpose, a small mast was fitted, as is common on motorboats. The classic red sails that come with the boat are, however, in very good condition and allow the vessel to be returned to full sailing configuration if desired.
Under sail, the Nauticat 33 behaves as expected from a motorsailer: not particularly fast, but stable and predictable. The boat performs best with some wind or when motor-sailing, and is clearly designed with comfort and control as priorities.
The build quality of these boats has been proven over time. The hull is heavily constructed in fiberglass, giving a solid and reassuring feel, even in more open waters. The teak deck was completely re-caulked in 2023, contributing to the long-term durability of the vessel.
The “Solveig” will mainly appeal to those looking for a solid and comfortable boat with ample interior space, suitable for relaxed cruising, extended stays on board, or longer journeys where reliability matters more than speed.
